What is a social media algorithm?

Definition: Social Media Algorithm

A social media algorithm is a set of computational rules and procedures used by social media platforms to sort, prioritize, and deliver content to users. These algorithms analyze user behavior, preferences, and interactions to personalize the content they see.

This can include determining:

  • What posts appear in a user’s feed
  • The order they appear
  • What advertisements or sponsored content are shared

The goal of social media algorithms is to keep users engaged on the platform by showing them content that is most likely to interest them and with which they’re most likely to engage, based on their past activity or chosen preferences.
