Platform landscape at a glance

In North America, the median follower count for Instagram auto accounts is almost the same as the median fan count for Facebook auto pages. The source chart for this metric displays relative bubble sizes without printed values, so the figures below reflect qualitative comparisons drawn directly from the slide’s own caption rather than exact medians.

Metric Instagram Facebook
Median followers / fans Roughly comparable to Facebook Roughly comparable to Instagram
Median posts published (quarter) Roughly comparable to Facebook Roughly comparable to Instagram
Median total interactions (quarter) Higher than Facebook Lower than Instagram

Activity volume on both platforms is roughly comparable, while user engagement on Instagram outpaces Facebook.

Median post interactions

Median post interactions track the middle-ranked page or profile by monthly interactions — a measure of typical performance rather than outlier peaks.

Platform Q2 2026 median post interactions
Instagram ~125
Facebook ~27

Instagram median post interactions ranged roughly between 105 and 135 over the past year, dipping to a low near 105 around December 2025 before recovering to approximately 125 by Q2 2026. Facebook held broadly flat in the high-20s to low-30s range throughout the same period, ending the quarter near 27.

Relative median post interactions

Relative median interactions index each platform’s performance against its own peak over the reporting period, making it easier to compare directional trends across platforms regardless of absolute scale.

By Q2 2026, Facebook’s relative median interactions had fallen to around 65% of its own peak (reached in early 2026) — its lowest point in the period — while Instagram sat close to 91% of its peak, down from its May 2025 high but still well ahead of Facebook’s relative decline.

Median post impressions

Impressions measure how many times posts were displayed, regardless of interaction. This metric is available for both platforms and reflects reach rather than engagement.

Platform Q2 2026 median post impressions
Instagram ~4,300
Facebook ~2,600

Instagram impressions surged to two notable peaks — around 9,800 in August/September 2025 and roughly 10,100 in November 2025 — before pulling back to approximately 4,300 by Q2 2026. Facebook impressions stayed comparatively flat across the period, in the 2,600–5,900 range, ending near 2,600.

Median post engagement rates this quarter:

  • Instagram: ~4.7%
  • Facebook: ~1.8%

Instagram engagement held in a fairly narrow 4.4%–5.5% band across the past year and ticked up slightly to around 4.7% by Q2 2026. Facebook engagement stayed close to 1.3%–1.8% throughout, ending the period near its high point of roughly 1.8%.

Best-performing post types

Facebook: Reel and Photo posts continue to outperform other formats organically, running neck-and-neck this quarter. In Q2 2026, Reel generated a median of 24 post interactions, while Photo also reached 24.

Instagram: Carousel and Reel posts lead organic performance. Carousels generated a median of 201 post interactions this quarter — 88 more than the second-highest post type, Reel, which reached 113.

Full organic post type performance (Q2 2026):

Post type Platform Median post interactions
Live Video Facebook ~19
Video Facebook ~18
Photo Facebook 24
Reel Facebook 24
Status Facebook ~17
Link Facebook ~10
Carousel Instagram 201
Reel Instagram 113
Image Instagram ~49

Post type distribution trends:

On Facebook, Photo remains the dominant post format at around 55% of posts, though Reels are gaining share steadily — rising from near zero earlier in the year to approximately 36% by Q2 2026. On Instagram, Reels, Images, and Carousels each account for roughly a third of posts published, with Reels and Carousels driving the majority of top-performing content.

How to use these benchmarks

These figures represent median performance across thousands of brand profiles in Emplifi’s dataset — they’re a useful calibration point, not a ceiling. If your Instagram engagement rate for auto content is sitting above 4.7%, you’re already ahead of the median for North America auto brands; below it, there are likely content-mix improvements worth testing, particularly around Carousel and Reel formats.

Methodology

This report is produced quarterly using Emplifi’s proprietary social media dataset — one of the largest in the industry, drawn from the platform used by more than 20,000 brands worldwide.

Data collection: Data is pulled once per quarter and reflects the state of Emplifi’s database at the start of the quarter following the period analyzed. It is not updated between releases.

Sample: 464 Facebook brand pages and 318 Instagram brand profiles in North America, April 1, 2026–June 30, 2026.

Minimum thresholds: Reports require a minimum of 50 Instagram profiles and 50 Facebook pages for a given region and industry combination. Interaction distribution data requires a minimum of 300 profiles. Ad benchmarks require a minimum of 200 active ad accounts from the region or industry.

Key definitions

  • Interactions (Facebook): Sum of all reactions (Like, Love, Haha, Wow, Sorry, Anger), comments, and shares on brand-published posts. Care reactions are counted under Likes.
  • Interactions (Instagram): Sum of likes and comments on brand-published posts.
  • Median post interactions: The middle-ranked page or profile when sorted by monthly post interactions. Represents typical performance, not average — so outliers don’t skew the figure.
  • Relative median interactions: Median interactions indexed to the maximum value in the reporting period for each platform, expressed as a percentage. Useful for comparing directional trends across platforms at different absolute scales.
  • Impressions: The number of times a post was displayed, regardless of whether it was interacted with. Reflects reach rather than engagement.
  • Engagement rate: Interactions divided by follower/fan count, expressed as a percentage.
  • Organic: Posts not paid to be promoted, detected using Emplifi’s internal algorithm with near-100% accuracy.
  • CPC / CPM: Median cost per click and cost per thousand impressions across all available ad accounts, shown for the top 5 placements by relative spend.
  • Relative spend: Normalized distribution (%) showing the average share of an account’s budget allocated to each placement.
  • CTR: Median click-through rate for the top 5 placements by relative spend.

All costs are in USD. All figures are medians unless otherwise noted. Data is first normalized at the profile/page level before aggregation.

Frequently asked questions

Instagram. Across 30 industries, Instagram posts got higher user engagement than Facebook posts — with no exceptions. Instagram also led on activity volume (post frequency) in most verticals, and ran neck-and-neck with Facebook in the rest. If you’re deciding where to focus organic effort this quarter, Instagram is the stronger channel almost everywhere.

Reels and carousels. In nearly every industry we benchmarked, these two formats drove the highest median post interactions, often by a wide margin over photos and stories. Which one wins first place varies by industry, but the reel-carousel pairing is the consistent pattern.

The Facebook feed. It had the lowest cost per click worldwide, with Facebook Reels close behind as the second-cheapest placement. Instagram Stories was the lowest-CPC Instagram placement, but still came in behind both Facebook options.

E-commerce, by a wide margin — accounting for 37.4% of all brand-profile interactions on Instagram and 27.5% on Facebook. Retail and services follow as the next-largest categories on both platforms, with fashion also ranking high on Instagram specifically.

Brands using UGC saw a 19.88x increase in conversion rate, a 5.06x increase in website visits, and a 1.08x increase in average order value, compared to brands that don’t (Emplifi Brands UGC benchmark, Q2 2026). Conversion rate is where UGC makes the biggest difference.
