What’s in this report

Ecommerce social media benchmarks for Q3 2026 show Instagram carrying the organic load: the median ecommerce brand’s Instagram post earned 34 interactions in September, against three on Facebook. Median engagement reached up to 1.08% on Instagram and up to 0.29% on Facebook across the quarter. Reels led on Instagram, and ecommerce advertisers paid more for reach than the Worldwide average but got a much higher click-through rate.

This quarterly benchmarks report draws on Emplifi’s dataset of 9,154 Facebook pages and 4,652 Instagram profiles in the worldwide ecommerce category, covering July 1, 2026, through Sept. 30, 2026.

User-generated content: what’s achievable

Brands using Emplifi’s UGC solution saw these average uplifts in Q3 2026:

  • 11.49x conversion rate
  • 4.84x repeat website visits
  • 1.03x average order value

The figures come from Emplifi’s Worldwide Brands UGC benchmark, averaged across 68 to 83 accounts per metric. That benchmark covers brands in every category, so it is not specific to ecommerce.

Organic performance: Facebook and Instagram

Interaction share by industry

Ecommerce is the biggest earner on Facebook of any category broken out in the data: it publishes 10.3% of brand posts but collects 31.3% of interactions, about four times the next category, finance. On Instagram, fashion dominates with 40.4% of interactions, and ecommerce ranks third with 8.3% from 6.3% of posts.

Facebook interaction distribution (Q3 2026):

Category Share of total interactions
Ecommerce 31.3%
Finance 7.8%
Services 4.8%
Auto 4.1%
Retail 3.5%
Others 48.6%

Instagram interaction distribution (Q3 2026):

Category Share of total interactions
Fashion 40.4%
Beauty 13.5%
Ecommerce 8.3%
Sporting goods 7.4%
Auto 5.1%
Others 25.1%

The categories listed are the region’s six highest-posting ones, ranked by share of interactions. Others combines every remaining category.

Platform landscape at a glance

Instagram is where the median ecommerce brand has the larger audience and the busier feed, and it collects about 14 times the interactions of the median Facebook page over the quarter.

Metric Instagram Facebook
Median followers / fans 98,652 74,367
Median posts published (quarter) 50 40
Median total interactions (quarter) 3,675 257

Median post interactions

This metric tracks the middle-ranked page or profile each month, so the giant streaming and marketplace accounts don’t skew it.

Platform Q3 2026 median post interactions
Instagram 34
Facebook 3

Instagram has barely moved: it eased from 36 in mid-2025 to 31 in February and March 2026, then recovered to 34 to 35 through the summer. Facebook slipped one step at a time, from five interactions through most of 2025 to four through most of 2026 and three in August and September.

Relative median post interactions

Instagram ended September 2026 at 94% of its July 2025 peak, so it has held almost all of its level. Facebook was at 60%, the lowest point for either platform in the period.

Median post impressions

Impressions count how often posts were displayed, whether or not anyone interacted. They measure visibility, not engagement.

Platform Q3 2026 median post impressions
Instagram 3,997
Facebook 2,318

Instagram impressions per post peaked at 7,740 in September 2025, roughly halved by April 2026 and have held near 4,000 to 4,400 since. Facebook impressions declined steadily from 4,668 in July 2025 to 2,318 in September 2026. Median impressions for brands worldwide fell over the same period too, on Facebook from about 1,500 to 779, so the decline is not specific to ecommerce.

Engagement rate trends

Median post engagement rates this quarter:

  • Instagram: up to 1.08%
  • Facebook: up to 0.29%

Across the quarter, Instagram’s monthly median ranged from 1.05% to 1.08% and Facebook’s from 0.27% to 0.29%. Instagram rose from a low of 0.73% in September 2025 to a high of 1.15% in April and May 2026. Facebook barely moved over 15 months, staying between 0.26% and 0.29%.

From this quarter, Emplifi calculates engagement rate from impressions instead of reach, because Facebook no longer provides reach data. These rates are therefore not comparable with the engagement rates in earlier quarterly reports.

Best-performing post types

Facebook: Live Video led at a median of 13.5 interactions, more than three times status updates and Reels (four each). Links earned three and photos, still the most-used format, two.

Instagram: Reels led with a median of 40 interactions, carousels earned 35, and single images 20.

Full organic post type performance (Q3 2026):

Post type Platform Median post interactions
Live Video Facebook 13.5
Status Facebook 4
Reel Facebook 4
Link Facebook 3
Photo Facebook 2
Reel Instagram 40
Carousel Instagram 35
Image Instagram 20

Post type distribution trends:

Photos made up 59.7% of ecommerce brands’ Facebook posts in September 2026, down from 69.8% in July 2025. Reels rose from 12.9% to 31.5%, with most of the change between September and October 2025, while status updates and links both lost share. On Instagram, Reels held steady at about 43% of posts, carousels grew from 27.2% to 31.3%, and single images fell from 28.6% to 25.0%.

Top performing pages and profiles

Facebook: top pages by total interactions (Q3 2026):

Rank Brand Posts Interactions
1 Netflix (US) 734 18,140,029
2 Prime Video (India) 654 14,317,800
3 Netflix (Philippines) 466 13,902,257

Instagram: top profiles by total interactions (Q3 2026):

Rank Brand Followers Posts Interactions
1 Netflix US 42,444,371 648 77,758,932
2 Netflix Brasil 40,808,733 652 71,227,246
3 Netflix India 15,208,290 679 53,358,265

Emplifi’s ecommerce category includes paid streaming services, which is why Netflix and Prime Video accounts lead both tables.

Top posts this quarter

All six top ecommerce posts were Reels, and five of them came from streaming services promoting their shows.

Paid performance: Facebook and Instagram ads

The placement figures below come from Emplifi’s ecommerce ad accounts benchmark, which pools ecommerce ad accounts across all regions. The cost trends table compares it with the Worldwide overall benchmark.

Where brands are spending

Facebook feed takes 35.50% of the average ecommerce ad budget, 20.31 percentage points more than Instagram feed. Instagram Stories and Facebook Reels are almost tied for third, and Instagram Reels takes the smallest share of the five.

CPC and CPM by placement

The most cost-efficient placements this quarter:

  • Lowest CPC: Facebook feed, Facebook Reels and Instagram Stories
  • Lowest CPM: Facebook Reels, Facebook feed and Instagram Reels

Facebook placements are cheapest on both counts: Facebook feed at $0.26 per click and Facebook Reels at a $4.13 CPM. Instagram feed is the priciest placement for both clicks ($0.81) and reach ($5.54 CPM).

Spend, CPC and CPM by placement (Q3 2026):

Placement Share of spend (%) CPC (USD) CPM (USD)
Facebook feed 35.50 0.26 4.17
Instagram feed 15.19 0.81 5.54
Instagram Stories 11.88 0.54 5.50
Facebook Reels 11.85 0.33 4.13
Instagram Reels 9.31 0.80 4.28

Click-through rate by placement

Facebook feed’s 1.58% CTR leads, with Facebook Reels second at 1.13%. Instagram Stories is the strongest Instagram placement at 0.89%.

CTR by placement (Q3 2026):

Placement CTR (%)
Facebook feed 1.58
Facebook Reels 1.13
Instagram Stories 0.89
Instagram feed 0.70
Instagram Reels 0.57

Cost trends over time

Q3 2026 ad cost benchmarks, shown for September 2026 with the quarter’s monthly range:

Metric Ecommerce benchmark Worldwide overall
CPM (USD) 2.86 (2.29 to 2.86) 2.25 (1.90 to 2.25)
CTR (%) 2.01 (1.78 to 2.01) 1.28 (1.13 to 1.28)

Ecommerce CPM rose to $2.86 in September 2026, the highest point of the 15 months, after moving between $2.10 and $2.78 earlier in the period. Ecommerce CTR also finished at its high, 2.01%, up from 1.11% in September 2025. Both run above the Worldwide overall figures ($2.25 CPM and 1.28% CTR in September 2026), so ecommerce advertisers pay more for reach but get more clicks from it. No monthly CPC series is available.

How to use these benchmarks

Use these medians as a calibration point for ecommerce brands. Pull your own September 2026 figures for:

  • Median post interactions
  • Median post impressions
  • Median engagement rate
  • Post type mix

On Instagram, Reels and carousels should carry most of the volume; single images earn about half as much. On Facebook, where the median post earns three interactions, measure success on reach and clicks, and use Live Video for launches and sales moments.

Methodology

This report is produced quarterly from Emplifi’s proprietary social media dataset, drawn from the platform used by more than 22,000 brands worldwide.

Data collection: Data is pulled once per quarter and reflects the state of Emplifi’s database at the start of the quarter following the period analyzed. It is not updated between releases.

Sample: 9,154 Facebook brand pages and 4,652 Instagram brand profiles in the worldwide ecommerce category, July 1, 2026, through Sept. 30, 2026.

Reporting period: Monthly metrics are reported for September 2026, the final month of the quarter, and trend commentary covers July 2025 through September 2026. The ads trend series also covers July 2025 through September 2026.

Minimum thresholds: Reports require a minimum of 50 Instagram profiles and 50 Facebook pages for a given region and industry combination. Interaction distribution data requires a minimum of 300 profiles. Ad benchmarks require a minimum of 200 active ad accounts from the region or industry.

Key definitions

  • Interactions (Facebook): Sum of all reactions (Like, Love, Haha, Wow, Sorry, Anger), comments and shares on brand-published posts. Care reactions are counted under Likes.
  • Interactions (Instagram): Sum of likes, comments, saves, shares and reposts on brand-published posts. Saves, shares and reposts are counted from Q3 2026.
  • Median post interactions: The middle-ranked page or profile when sorted by monthly post interactions. It represents typical performance rather than an average, so outliers don’t skew the figure.
  • Relative median interactions: Median interactions indexed to the maximum value in the reporting period for each platform, expressed as a percentage. Useful for comparing direction across platforms at different absolute scales.
  • Impressions: The number of times a post was displayed, whether or not anyone interacted with it. Reflects visibility rather than engagement.
  • Engagement rate: Interactions divided by impressions, expressed as a percentage. From Q3 2026 the rate is based on impressions instead of reach, because Facebook no longer provides reach data, so it is not comparable with earlier quarters.
  • Organic: Posts not paid to be promoted, detected using Emplifi’s internal algorithm with near-100% accuracy.
  • CPC / CPM: Median cost per click and cost per thousand impressions across all available ad accounts, shown for the top five placements by relative spend.
  • Relative spend: Normalized distribution (%) showing the average share of an account’s budget allocated to each placement.
  • CTR: Median click-through rate for the top five placements by relative spend.

All costs are in USD. All figures are medians unless otherwise noted; UGC uplifts are averages. Data is first normalized at the profile or page level before aggregation.
