What’s in this report

FMCG food social media benchmarks for Q3 2026 show Instagram holding steady while Facebook interactions slide: the median FMCG food brand’s Instagram post earned 33 interactions in September, against nine on Facebook, the lowest Facebook figure in 15 months. Median engagement reached up to 2.17% on Instagram and up to 0.57% on Facebook across the quarter. Carousels led on Instagram, and food advertisers bought reach at a September CPM of about $1.03.

This quarterly benchmarks report draws on Emplifi’s dataset of 9,543 Facebook pages and 4,643 Instagram profiles in the worldwide FMCG food category, covering July 1, 2026, through Sept. 30, 2026.

User-generated content: what’s achievable

Brands using Emplifi’s UGC solution saw these average uplifts in Q3 2026:

  • 11.49x conversion rate
  • 4.84x repeat website visits
  • 1.03x average order value

The figures come from Emplifi’s Worldwide Brands UGC benchmark, averaged across 68 to 83 accounts per metric. That benchmark covers brands in every category, so it is not specific to FMCG food.

Organic performance: Facebook and Instagram

Interaction share by industry

FMCG food draws more than its share of Facebook interactions: 3.0% of brand posts and 4.2% of interactions, fourth among the categories broken out in the data, behind ecommerce, finance and services. On Instagram it publishes 1.1% of brand posts for 0.9% of interactions, in a feed where fashion takes 40.4%.

Facebook interaction distribution (Q3 2026):

Category Share of total interactions
Ecommerce 31.3%
Finance 7.8%
Services 4.8%
FMCG food 4.2%
Auto 4.1%
Others 47.9%

Instagram interaction distribution (Q3 2026):

Category Share of total interactions
Fashion 40.4%
Beauty 13.5%
Ecommerce 8.3%
Sporting goods 7.4%
Auto 5.1%
Others 25.1%

The tables rank the region’s six highest-posting categories, plus FMCG food, by share of interactions. Others combines every remaining category.

Platform landscape at a glance

FMCG food brands have the bigger audience on Facebook, with almost twice as many fans as Instagram followers. Instagram profiles post slightly more often and collect almost three times the interactions over the quarter.

Metric Instagram Facebook
Median followers / fans 31,923 60,205
Median posts published (quarter) 25 22
Median total interactions (quarter) 1,470 527

Median post interactions

Medians follow the middle-ranked page or profile each month, so a handful of very large food brands can’t lift the figure.

Platform Q3 2026 median post interactions
Instagram 33
Facebook 9

Instagram stayed between 32 and 36 interactions per post for all 15 months and ended September 2026 at 33. Facebook slid gradually from 15 in July 2025 to 12 or 11 by mid-2026, then fell to nine in September.

Relative median post interactions

Instagram finished September 2026 at 92% of its peak. Facebook ended at 60% of its July 2025 level, the lowest point for either platform.

Median post impressions

Impressions count how often posts were displayed, whether or not anyone interacted. They measure visibility, not engagement.

Platform Q3 2026 median post impressions
Instagram 1,681
Facebook 1,394

Instagram impressions per post fell from 3,338 in September 2025 to about 2,000 in December and have stayed between about 1,600 and 1,900 since. Facebook held between 3,100 and 3,400 until January 2026, then declined every few months to 1,394 in September 2026. The decline is broad: median impressions for brands worldwide fell on both platforms over the same period, on Facebook from about 1,500 to 779.

Engagement rate trends

Median post engagement rates this quarter:

  • Instagram: up to 2.17%
  • Facebook: up to 0.57%

Across the quarter, Instagram’s monthly median ranged from 2.02% to 2.17% and Facebook’s from 0.55% to 0.57%. Instagram’s rate rose from a low of 1.16% in August 2025 to a high of 2.32% in April 2026. Facebook stayed in a tight 0.53% to 0.62% range for the full period.

From this quarter, Emplifi calculates engagement rate from impressions instead of reach, because Facebook no longer provides reach data. These rates are therefore not comparable with the engagement rates in earlier quarterly reports.

Best-performing post types

Facebook: Live Video led at a median of 23 interactions, but it is barely used, at about 0.1% of posts. Links earned 14, twice the seven that photos, Reels and status updates each earned.

Instagram: Carousels led with a median of 41 interactions, ahead of Reels (36) and single images (26).

Full organic post type performance (Q3 2026):

Photos fell from 65.7% to 56.3%, and status updates from 8.4% to 2.1%. On Instagram, Reels make up almost half of posts (47.5% in September 2026), while carousels, the best performer, rose from 16.8% to 19.9% and single images fell from 36.5% to 31.7%.

Paid performance: Facebook and Instagram ads

The placement figures below come from Emplifi’s FMCG food ad accounts benchmark, which pools FMCG food ad accounts across all regions. The cost trends table compares it with the Worldwide overall benchmark.

Where brands are spending

FMCG food advertisers put 38.29% of their budgets into Facebook feed, 22.33 percentage points more than Instagram feed. Instagram Reels takes a slightly larger share than Facebook Reels, and Instagram Stories is fifth.

CPC and CPM by placement

The most cost-efficient placements this quarter:

  • Lowest CPC: Facebook feed, Facebook Reels and Instagram feed
  • Lowest CPM: Facebook feed, Facebook Reels and Instagram feed

Reach is cheap for food brands: all five placements have a CPM under $2. Clicks vary much more, from $0.32 on Facebook feed to $2.16 on Instagram Reels.

Spend, CPC and CPM by placement (Q3 2026):

Placement Share of spend (%) CPC (USD) CPM (USD)
Facebook feed 38.29 0.32 1.34
Instagram feed 15.95 1.56 1.59
Instagram Reels 13.93 2.16 1.60
Facebook Reels 11.97 0.76 1.54
Instagram Stories 6.81 1.78 1.82

Click-through rate by placement

CTRs are low across the board, led by Facebook feed at 0.31%. The three Instagram placements are below 0.1%, consistent with campaigns built for awareness rather than clicks.

CTR by placement (Q3 2026):

Placement CTR (%)
Facebook feed 0.31
Facebook Reels 0.15
Instagram Stories 0.09
Instagram feed 0.08
Instagram Reels 0.05

Cost trends over time

Q3 2026 ad cost benchmarks, shown for September 2026 with the quarter’s monthly range:

Metric FMCG food benchmark Worldwide overall
CPM (USD) 1.03 (0.92 to 1.03) 2.25 (1.90 to 2.25)
CTR (%) 0.27 (0.25 to 0.27) 1.28 (1.13 to 1.28)

FMCG food CPM moved within a narrow band, from $0.84 in July 2025 to a peak of $1.15 in November 2025, and ended September 2026 at $1.03, less than half the Worldwide overall figure of $2.25. FMCG food CTR rose from 0.21% to a high of 0.29% in April 2026 and finished at 0.27%, far below Worldwide overall (1.28%). No monthly CPC series is available.

How to use these benchmarks

Use these medians as a calibration point for packaged food brands. Compare your own September 2026 figures with:

  • Median post interactions
  • Median post impressions
  • Median engagement rate
  • Post type mix

On Instagram, carousels earn the most but make up only a fifth of posts, so there is room to use more of them. On Facebook, link posts outperform the photos and Reels that dominate the feed. For paid media, measure food campaigns on reach and CPM, where the category is efficient, rather than CTR.

Methodology

This report is produced quarterly from Emplifi’s proprietary social media dataset, drawn from the platform used by more than 22,000 brands worldwide.

Data collection: Data is pulled once per quarter and reflects the state of Emplifi’s database at the start of the quarter following the period analyzed. It is not updated between releases.

Sample: 9,543 Facebook brand pages and 4,643 Instagram brand profiles in the worldwide FMCG food category, July 1, 2026, through Sept. 30, 2026.

Reporting period: Monthly metrics are reported for September 2026, the final month of the quarter, and trend commentary covers July 2025 through September 2026. The ads trend series also covers July 2025 through September 2026.

Minimum thresholds: Reports require a minimum of 50 Instagram profiles and 50 Facebook pages for a given region and industry combination. Interaction distribution data requires a minimum of 300 profiles. Ad benchmarks require a minimum of 200 active ad accounts from the region or industry.

Key definitions

  • Interactions (Facebook): Sum of all reactions (Like, Love, Haha, Wow, Sorry, Anger), comments and shares on brand-published posts. Care reactions are counted under Likes.
  • Interactions (Instagram): Sum of likes, comments, saves, shares and reposts on brand-published posts. Saves, shares and reposts are counted from Q3 2026.
  • Median post interactions: The middle-ranked page or profile when sorted by monthly post interactions. It represents typical performance rather than an average, so outliers don’t skew the figure.
  • Relative median interactions: Median interactions indexed to the maximum value in the reporting period for each platform, expressed as a percentage. Useful for comparing direction across platforms at different absolute scales.
  • Impressions: The number of times a post was displayed, whether or not anyone interacted with it. Reflects visibility rather than engagement.
  • Engagement rate: Interactions divided by impressions, expressed as a percentage. From Q3 2026 the rate is based on impressions instead of reach, because Facebook no longer provides reach data, so it is not comparable with earlier quarters.
  • Organic: Posts not paid to be promoted, detected using Emplifi’s internal algorithm with near-100% accuracy.
  • CPC / CPM: Median cost per click and cost per thousand impressions across all available ad accounts, shown for the top five placements by relative spend.
  • Relative spend: Normalized distribution (%) showing the average share of an account’s budget allocated to each placement.
  • CTR: Median click-through rate for the top five placements by relative spend.

All costs are in USD. All figures are medians unless otherwise noted; UGC uplifts are averages. Data is first normalized at the profile or page level before aggregation.
