Generative AI

Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that creates new content such as text, images, video, code, or audio by learning patterns from large datasets.

What it is

Generative AI systems produce outputs based on prompts, using learned statistical patterns to generate content that resembles their training data.

These systems do not retrieve pre-written answers; they generate responses dynamically, token by token.

How it works

Generative AI models:

  • Are trained on large datasets (text, images, etc.)
  • Learn patterns, structure, and relationships in that data
  • Generate outputs by predicting the most likely next element (word, pixel, etc.)

Most modern generative AI systems are powered by deep learning architectures such as transformers.

Example

A marketer prompts:

“Write 5 variations of a product launch email.”

The system generates multiple distinct versions of the email, each following learned language patterns.

Why it matters

Generative AI enables content creation at scale, reducing time and cost across marketing, customer service, and product workflows.

However, it does not inherently evaluate whether outputs achieve business goals.

Key distinction

Generative AI differs from agentic AI in that it is prompt-driven and output-focused, rather than goal-driven and action-oriented.
