This quarterly benchmarks report pulls from Emplifi’s dataset of 9,689 Facebook pages and 4,676 Instagram profiles across Worldwide, covering April 1, 2026 through June 30, 2026.

Platform landscape at a glance

In Worldwide FMCG Food, the picture flips from the usual pattern: median Instagram follower counts are lower than median Facebook fan counts. The figures below reflect relative standing across all profiles in the sample at the end of Q2 2026.

Metric Instagram Facebook
Median followers / fans Lower Higher
Median posts published (quarter) Higher Lower
Median total interactions (quarter) Higher Lower

Activity volume is higher on Instagram than on Facebook, and user engagement on Instagram also outpaces Facebook by a wide margin.

Median post interactions

Median post interactions track the middle-ranked page or profile by monthly interactions — a measure of typical performance rather than outlier peaks.

Platform Q2 2026 median post interactions
Instagram 31
Facebook 10

Instagram held a consistent lead over Facebook across the past year, with both platforms easing gradually lower — Instagram slipped from around 39 to roughly 31 by Q2 2026, while Facebook eased from about 15 to 10 over the same stretch.

Relative median post interactions

Relative median interactions index each platform’s performance against its own peak over the reporting period, making it easier to compare directional trends across platforms regardless of absolute scale.

By Q2 2026, Facebook’s relative median interactions had fallen to around 65% of its peak — its lowest point in the period — while Instagram stayed closer to its own peak at around 85%.

Median post impressions

Impressions measure how many times posts were displayed, regardless of interaction. This metric is available for both platforms and reflects reach rather than engagement.

Platform Q2 2026 median post impressions
Instagram ~1,500
Facebook ~1,500

Facebook impressions started high, near 3,600 in mid-2025, then drifted steadily down to about 1,500 by Q2 2026. Instagram moved the opposite way at first — climbing from around 1,000 to a peak near 3,500 in late summer 2025 — before pulling back to roughly 1,500 by Q2 2026, converging with Facebook by the end of the period.

Engagement rate trends

Median post engagement rates this quarter:

  • Instagram: ~3.8%
  • Facebook: ~1.0%

Instagram engagement held steady in the high-3% range across the past year, ending Q2 2026 around 3.8%. Facebook engagement crept up modestly, from about 0.6% to 1.0%, but remains well below Instagram.

Best-performing post types

Facebook: Live Video and standard Video continue to outperform other formats organically. In Q2 2026, Live Video generated a median of 29 post interactions, while standard Video reached 4. Link posts were also a strong performer this quarter, generating 16 median interactions.

Instagram: Carousel and Reel posts lead organic performance. Carousels generated a median of 37 post interactions this quarter; Reels reached 35.

Full organic post type performance (Q2 2026):

Post type distribution trends:

On Instagram, Reels, Images, and Carousels each account for roughly a third of posts published, with Reels and Carousels driving the majority of top-performing content.

How to use these benchmarks

These figures represent median performance across thousands of brand profiles in Emplifi’s dataset — they’re a useful calibration point, not a ceiling. If your Instagram engagement rate is sitting above 3.8%, you’re already ahead of the median for FMCG Food brands worldwide; if your Facebook posts are earning fewer than 10 median interactions, there’s likely room to tighten up your content mix.

Frequently asked questions

Instagram. Across 30 industries, Instagram posts got higher user engagement than Facebook posts — with no exceptions. Instagram also led on activity volume (post frequency) in most verticals, and ran neck-and-neck with Facebook in the rest. If you’re deciding where to focus organic effort this quarter, Instagram is the stronger channel almost everywhere.

Reels and carousels. In nearly every industry we benchmarked, these two formats drove the highest median post interactions, often by a wide margin over photos and stories. Which one wins first place varies by industry, but the reel-carousel pairing is the consistent pattern.

The Facebook feed. It had the lowest cost per click worldwide, with Facebook Reels close behind as the second-cheapest placement. Instagram Stories was the lowest-CPC Instagram placement, but still came in behind both Facebook options.

E-commerce, by a wide margin — accounting for 37.4% of all brand-profile interactions on Instagram and 27.5% on Facebook. Retail and services follow as the next-largest categories on both platforms, with fashion also ranking high on Instagram specifically.

Brands using UGC saw a 19.88x increase in conversion rate, a 5.06x increase in website visits, and a 1.08x increase in average order value, compared to brands that don’t (Emplifi Brands UGC benchmark, Q2 2026). Conversion rate is where UGC makes the biggest difference.
