Europe Social Media Benchmarks: Airlines Q2 2026

Emplifi Team Social Media Marketing Experts

What’s in this report

In Q2 2026, European airline brands saw Instagram far outpace Facebook on organic engagement, with median post interactions running roughly five times higher on Instagram than on Facebook. Ecommerce still commands the largest share of total brand interactions across Europe on both platforms, with Airlines representing a modest slice — 1.3% on Facebook and 0.8% on Instagram. On the paid side, the Facebook feed remained both the top ad-spend destination and the most cost-efficient placement for clicks and CTR.

This quarterly benchmarks report pulls from Emplifi’s dataset of 147 Facebook pages and 65 Instagram profiles across Europe, covering April 1, 2026 through June 30, 2026.

User-generated content: what’s achievable

Brands using Emplifi’s UGC solution this quarter saw:

  • 19.88x increase in conversion rate
  • 5.06x increase in website visits
  • 1.08x increase in average order value

These figures represent the median uplift seen across Emplifi’s Brands UGC Accounts Benchmark for Q2 2026.

Platform landscape at a glance

In Europe, the median number of followers for Instagram accounts in Airlines is roughly comparable to the number of fans for Facebook accounts. The underlying chart for this quarter shows relative sizing rather than printed follower/post/interaction counts, so the table below reflects directional comparisons rather than exact figures.

Metric Instagram Facebook
Median followers / fans Roughly comparable to Facebook Roughly comparable to Instagram
Median posts published (quarter) Higher Lower
Median total interactions (quarter) Higher Lower

Activity volume on both platforms is higher on Instagram, while user engagement on Instagram outpaces Facebook.

Median post interactions

Median post interactions track the middle-ranked page or profile by monthly interactions — a measure of typical performance rather than outlier peaks.

Platform Q2 2026 median post interactions
Instagram ~305
Facebook ~60

Instagram median post interactions swung between roughly 305 and 540 over the past five quarters, peaking in December 2025 before pulling back to around 305 by the end of Q2 2026. Facebook stayed much lower and comparatively flat throughout, hovering in the 60–115 range and ending the quarter near 60.

Relative median post interactions

Relative median interactions index each platform’s performance against its own peak over the reporting period, making it easier to compare directional trends across platforms regardless of absolute scale.

By the end of Q2 2026, Facebook’s relative median interactions had fallen to around 51% of its peak, while Instagram sat close behind at roughly 56% of its own high point — both platforms ending the period well off the highs they reached mid-cycle.

Median post impressions

Impressions measure how many times posts were displayed, regardless of interaction. This metric is available for both platforms and reflects reach rather than engagement.

Instagram Not reported
Facebook Not reported

Impressions data was not broken out in this quarter’s Airlines Europe deck, so no median impressions figures or trend are available for this report. This is a genuine gap in the source data rather than an omission on our part.

Methodology

This report is produced quarterly using Emplifi’s proprietary social media dataset — one of the largest in the industry, drawn from the platform used by more than 20,000 brands worldwide.

Data collection: Data is pulled once per quarter and reflects the state of Emplifi’s database at the start of the quarter following the period analyzed. It is not updated between releases.

Sample: 147 Facebook brand pages and 65 Instagram brand profiles in Europe, April 1, 2026–June 30, 2026.

Minimum thresholds: Reports require a minimum of 50 Instagram profiles and 50 Facebook pages for a given region and industry combination. Interaction distribution data requires a minimum of 300 profiles. Ad benchmarks require a minimum of 200 active ad accounts from the region or industry.

Key definitions

  • Interactions (Facebook): Sum of all reactions (Like, Love, Haha, Wow, Sorry, Anger), comments, and shares on brand-published posts. Care reactions are counted under Likes.
  • Interactions (Instagram): Sum of likes and comments on brand-published posts.
  • Median post interactions: The middle-ranked page or profile when sorted by monthly post interactions. Represents typical performance, not average — so outliers don’t skew the figure.
  • Relative median interactions: Median interactions indexed to the maximum value in the reporting period for each platform, expressed as a percentage. Useful for comparing directional trends across platforms at different absolute scales.
  • Impressions: The number of times a post was displayed, regardless of whether it was interacted with. Reflects reach rather than engagement.
  • Engagement rate: Interactions divided by follower/fan count, expressed as a percentage.
  • Organic: Posts not paid to be promoted, detected using Emplifi’s internal algorithm with near-100% accuracy.
  • CPC / CPM: Median cost per click and cost per thousand impressions across all available ad accounts, shown for the top 5 placements by relative spend.
  • Relative spend: Normalized distribution (%) showing the average share of an account’s budget allocated to each placement.
  • CTR: Median click-through rate for the top 5 placements by relative spend.

All costs are in USD. All figures are medians unless otherwise noted. Data is first normalized at the profile/page level before aggregation.

Frequently asked questions

Instagram. Across 30 industries, Instagram posts got higher user engagement than Facebook posts — with no exceptions. Instagram also led on activity volume (post frequency) in most verticals, and ran neck-and-neck with Facebook in the rest. If you’re deciding where to focus organic effort this quarter, Instagram is the stronger channel almost everywhere.

Reels and carousels. In nearly every industry we benchmarked, these two formats drove the highest median post interactions, often by a wide margin over photos and stories. Which one wins first place varies by industry, but the reel-carousel pairing is the consistent pattern.

The Facebook feed. It had the lowest cost per click worldwide, with Facebook Reels close behind as the second-cheapest placement. Instagram Stories was the lowest-CPC Instagram placement, but still came in behind both Facebook options.

E-commerce, by a wide margin — accounting for 37.4% of all brand-profile interactions on Instagram and 27.5% on Facebook. Retail and services follow as the next-largest categories on both platforms, with fashion also ranking high on Instagram specifically.

Brands using UGC saw a 19.88x increase in conversion rate, a 5.06x increase in website visits, and a 1.08x increase in average order value, compared to brands that don’t (Emplifi Brands UGC benchmark, Q2 2026). Conversion rate is where UGC makes the biggest difference.
