Platform landscape at a glance

In Worldwide Electronics, Instagram brand profiles carry a median follower count that’s nearly on par with Facebook pages’ median fan count — a closer gap than in many other industries. Precise follower, post, and interaction medians are represented as relative circle sizes in Emplifi’s landscape view rather than printed values, so the figures below are directional rather than absolute.

Metric Instagram Facebook
Median followers / fans Comparable to Facebook Comparable to Instagram
Median posts published (quarter) Higher activity volume Lower activity volume
Median total interactions (quarter) Higher interactions Lower interactions

Activity volume on both platforms is roughly comparable, with Instagram running slightly ahead, while user engagement on Instagram clearly outpaces Facebook.

Median post interactions

Median post interactions track the middle-ranked page or profile by monthly interactions — a measure of typical performance rather than outlier peaks.

Platform Q2 2026 median post interactions
Instagram ~27
Facebook ~8

Instagram median post interactions trended downward across the full year, falling from around 40 in mid-2025 to around 27 by June 2026. Facebook held in a narrow band of roughly 8–11 throughout the same period, ending near the low end of that range.

Relative median post interactions

Relative median interactions index each platform’s performance against its own peak over the reporting period, making it easier to compare directional trends across platforms regardless of absolute scale.

By June 2026, Instagram’s relative median interactions had drifted down to around 70% of its own peak, its lowest point in the period, while Facebook stayed closer to its peak at around 85–90% after some mid-year fluctuation.

Median post impressions

Impressions measure how many times posts were displayed, regardless of interaction. This metric is available for both platforms and reflects reach rather than engagement.

Platform Q2 2026 median post impressions
Instagram ~1,650
Facebook ~1,650

Instagram impressions climbed sharply through mid-2025, peaking near 3,300 around September and again in November, before falling steeply to roughly 1,600–1,700 by early 2026 — essentially converging with Facebook’s more stable, gradually declining trend line by Q2 2026.

Engagement rate trends

Median post engagement rates this quarter:

  • Instagram: ~2.75%
  • Facebook: ~1.0%

Instagram engagement held broadly steady in the 2.5–2.8% range for the full year, with only minor fluctuation. Facebook engagement drifted gradually upward over the same period, rising from around 0.6% to roughly 1.0% by June 2026.

Best-performing post types

Facebook: Live Video and Link posts lead organic performance. In Q2 2026, Live Video generated a median of 33 post interactions, while Link posts reached 8.

Instagram: Carousel and Reel posts lead organic performance. Carousels generated a median of 39 post interactions this quarter; Reels reached 31.

Full organic post type performance (Q2 2026):

Link Facebook 8
Status Facebook 7
Reel Facebook ~6.5
Photo Facebook ~6

Carousel Instagram 39
Reel Instagram 31

On Instagram, Reels lead post distribution at around 45%, followed by Image at roughly 30% and Carousel at around 22%, with Reels and Carousels also driving the bulk of top-performing content.

Frequently asked questions

Instagram. Across 30 industries, Instagram posts got higher user engagement than Facebook posts — with no exceptions. Instagram also led on activity volume (post frequency) in most verticals, and ran neck-and-neck with Facebook in the rest. If you’re deciding where to focus organic effort this quarter, Instagram is the stronger channel almost everywhere.

Reels and carousels. In nearly every industry we benchmarked, these two formats drove the highest median post interactions, often by a wide margin over photos and stories. Which one wins first place varies by industry, but the reel-carousel pairing is the consistent pattern.

The Facebook feed. It had the lowest cost per click worldwide, with Facebook Reels close behind as the second-cheapest placement. Instagram Stories was the lowest-CPC Instagram placement, but still came in behind both Facebook options.

E-commerce, by a wide margin — accounting for 37.4% of all brand-profile interactions on Instagram and 27.5% on Facebook. Retail and services follow as the next-largest categories on both platforms, with fashion also ranking high on Instagram specifically.

Brands using UGC saw a 19.88x increase in conversion rate, a 5.06x increase in website visits, and a 1.08x increase in average order value, compared to brands that don’t (Emplifi Brands UGC benchmark, Q2 2026). Conversion rate is where UGC makes the biggest difference.
