Platform landscape at a glance

In North America, Facebook pages for FMCG Food brands carry a higher median fan count than Instagram profiles carry in followers. The source chart for this slide (a bubble/circle comparison) does not publish exact axis values — only relative bubble sizes — so the table below reflects directional comparisons rather than precise figures.

Metric Instagram Facebook
Median followers / fans Lower Higher
Median posts published (quarter) Higher Lower
Median total interactions (quarter) Higher Lower

Activity volume is higher on Instagram than on Facebook, while user engagement on Instagram also outpaces Facebook.

Median post interactions

Median post interactions track the middle-ranked page or profile by monthly interactions — a measure of typical performance rather than outlier peaks.

Platform Q2 2026 median post interactions
Instagram ~38
Facebook ~9

Instagram median post interactions held in a roughly 36–47 range across the past year, ending Q2 2026 around 38, below its May 2025 starting point. Facebook drifted down gradually from around 14 in mid-2025 to approximately 9 by Q2 2026, its lowest point in the period.

Relative median post interactions

Relative median interactions index each platform’s performance against its own peak over the reporting period, making it easier to compare directional trends across platforms regardless of absolute scale.

By Q2 2026, Facebook’s relative median interactions had fallen to around 63% of its peak — its lowest point in the period — after repeatedly sitting in the mid-80s to low-90s range for most of the year. Instagram ended at around 81% of its own peak, well above a mid-period low near 76% reached around December 2025.

Median post impressions

Impressions measure how many times posts were displayed, regardless of interaction. This metric is available for both platforms and reflects reach rather than engagement.

Platform Q2 2026 median post impressions
Instagram ~1,280
Facebook ~1,550

Facebook impressions were volatile, rising from around 3,700 in May 2025 to a peak near 3,900 in October 2025, before declining steadily to approximately 1,550 by Q2 2026. Instagram impressions climbed steadily to a peak of roughly 4,300 in October 2025, then declined steadily to around 1,280 by Q2 2026.

Median post engagement rates this quarter:

  • Instagram: ~4.85%
  • Facebook: ~1.25%

Instagram engagement held mostly in a 4%–5% range across the past year, dipping to a low near 4.0% around December 2025 before climbing back to approximately 4.85% by Q2 2026 — near its highest point in the period. Facebook engagement stayed low throughout, bottoming out near 0.65% in mid-2025 before gradually recovering to around 1.25% by Q2 2026.

Best-performing post types

Facebook: Link and Photo posts continue to outperform other formats organically. In Q2 2026, Link posts generated a median of 12 post interactions, while Photo posts reached 9.

Instagram: Reel and Carousel posts lead organic performance, with Reels narrowly ahead. Carousels generated a median of 45 post interactions this quarter; Reels reached 46.

On Instagram, Reels, Images, and Carousels each account for roughly a third of posts published, with Reels and Carousels driving the majority of top-performing content.

How to use these benchmarks

These figures represent median performance across thousands of brand profiles in Emplifi’s dataset — they’re a useful calibration point, not a ceiling. If your Instagram engagement rate is above 4.85%, you’re already ahead of the North America FMCG Food median; below it, there’s likely room to lean further into Reel and Carousel content.

Methodology

This report is produced quarterly using Emplifi’s proprietary social media dataset — one of the largest in the industry, drawn from the platform used by more than 20,000 brands worldwide.

Data collection: Data is pulled once per quarter and reflects the state of Emplifi’s database at the start of the quarter following the period analyzed. It is not updated between releases.

Sample: 990 Facebook brand pages and 720 Instagram brand profiles in North America, April 1, 2026–June 30, 2026.

Minimum thresholds: Reports require a minimum of 50 Instagram profiles and 50 Facebook pages for a given region and industry combination. Interaction distribution data requires a minimum of 300 profiles. Ad benchmarks require a minimum of 200 active ad accounts from the region or industry.

Key definitions

  • Interactions (Facebook): Sum of all reactions (Like, Love, Haha, Wow, Sorry, Anger), comments, and shares on brand-published posts. Care reactions are counted under Likes.
  • Interactions (Instagram): Sum of likes and comments on brand-published posts.
  • Median post interactions: The middle-ranked page or profile when sorted by monthly post interactions. Represents typical performance, not average — so outliers don’t skew the figure.
  • Relative median interactions: Median interactions indexed to the maximum value in the reporting period for each platform, expressed as a percentage. Useful for comparing directional trends across platforms at different absolute scales.
  • Impressions: The number of times a post was displayed, regardless of whether it was interacted with. Reflects reach rather than engagement.
  • Engagement rate: Interactions divided by follower/fan count, expressed as a percentage.
  • Organic: Posts not paid to be promoted, detected using Emplifi’s internal algorithm with near-100% accuracy.
  • CPC / CPM: Median cost per click and cost per thousand impressions across all available ad accounts, shown for the top 5 placements by relative spend.
  • Relative spend: Normalized distribution (%) showing the average share of an account’s budget allocated to each placement.
  • CTR: Median click-through rate for the top 5 placements by relative spend.

All costs are in USD. All figures are medians unless otherwise noted. Data is first normalized at the profile/page level before aggregation.

Frequently asked questions

Instagram. Across 30 industries, Instagram posts got higher user engagement than Facebook posts — with no exceptions. Instagram also led on activity volume (post frequency) in most verticals, and ran neck-and-neck with Facebook in the rest. If you’re deciding where to focus organic effort this quarter, Instagram is the stronger channel almost everywhere.

Reels and carousels. In nearly every industry we benchmarked, these two formats drove the highest median post interactions, often by a wide margin over photos and stories. Which one wins first place varies by industry, but the reel-carousel pairing is the consistent pattern.

The Facebook feed. It had the lowest cost per click worldwide, with Facebook Reels close behind as the second-cheapest placement. Instagram Stories was the lowest-CPC Instagram placement, but still came in behind both Facebook options.

E-commerce, by a wide margin — accounting for 37.4% of all brand-profile interactions on Instagram and 27.5% on Facebook. Retail and services follow as the next-largest categories on both platforms, with fashion also ranking high on Instagram specifically.

Brands using UGC saw a 19.88x increase in conversion rate, a 5.06x increase in website visits, and a 1.08x increase in average order value, compared to brands that don’t (Emplifi Brands UGC benchmark, Q2 2026). Conversion rate is where UGC makes the biggest difference.
