What’s in this report

Auto social media benchmarks for Q3 2026 show Instagram holding steady while Facebook slips: the median auto brand’s Instagram post earned 50 interactions in September, against 15 on Facebook, Facebook’s lowest in 15 months. Median engagement reached up to 2.16% on Instagram and up to 0.85% on Facebook across the quarter, both 15-month highs. Carousels led on Instagram, and Live Video led on Facebook.

This quarterly benchmarks report draws on Emplifi’s dataset of 5,464 Facebook pages and 3,188 Instagram profiles in the worldwide auto category, covering July 1, 2026, through Sept. 30, 2026.

User-generated content: what’s achievable

Brands using Emplifi’s UGC solution saw these average uplifts in Q3 2026:

  • 11.49x conversion rate
  • 4.84x repeat website visits
  • 1.03x average order value

The figures come from Emplifi’s Worldwide Brands UGC benchmark, averaged across 68 to 83 accounts per metric. That benchmark covers brands in every category, so it is not specific to auto.

Organic performance: Facebook and Instagram

Interaction share by industry

Auto is one of the region’s six highest-posting categories, so it appears in both tables. It posts more than its interaction weight on both platforms: 6.4% of brand posts on Facebook for 4.1% of interactions, and 5.7% of Instagram posts for 5.1%. Ecommerce collects the largest Facebook share of any category broken out, and fashion dominates Instagram.

Facebook interaction distribution (Q3 2026):

Category Share of total interactions
Ecommerce 31.3%
Finance 7.8%
Services 4.8%
Auto 4.1%
Retail 3.5%
Others 48.6%

Instagram interaction distribution (Q3 2026):

Category Share of total interactions
Fashion 40.4%
Beauty 13.5%
Ecommerce 8.3%
Sporting goods 7.4%
Auto 5.1%
Others 25.1%

The table ranks the region’s six highest-posting categories by share of interactions and shows the top five. Others combines every remaining category.

Platform landscape at a glance

Auto brands have the bigger audience on Facebook, where the median page has about 65% more fans than the median Instagram profile. Instagram still produces more than twice the interactions over the quarter, on a similar posting rate.

Metric Instagram Facebook
Median followers / fans 38,346 63,388
Median posts published (quarter) 39 35
Median total interactions (quarter) 3,447 1,469

Median post interactions

Because this metric follows the middle-ranked page or profile, a few viral brands can’t skew it.

Platform Q3 2026 median post interactions
Instagram 50
Facebook 15

Instagram has hardly moved, staying between 44 and 53 for the whole period. Facebook held at 22 to 26 through January 2026, then fell steadily to 15 in September, its lowest point.

Relative median post interactions

Against each platform’s own 15-month high, Instagram ended September at 94% of its August 2025 peak. Facebook finished at 58% of its January 2026 high, the lowest reading for either platform in the period.

Median post impressions

Impressions count how often posts were displayed, whether or not anyone interacted. They measure visibility, not engagement.

Platform Q3 2026 median post impressions
Instagram 2,271
Facebook 2,190

The two platforms ended the quarter almost level on impressions, a sharp change from mid-2025. Instagram fell from a peak of 5,769 in August 2025 to about 2,300 by February 2026 and has stayed close to that since. Facebook fell more slowly, from 5,243 in July 2025, with the steepest drop in Q3. The decline is not specific to auto: median impressions for brands worldwide fell from about 1,500 to 779 on Facebook and from about 3,900 to about 2,050 on Instagram between July 2025 and September 2026.

Engagement rate trends

Median post engagement rates this quarter:

  • Instagram: up to 2.16%
  • Facebook: up to 0.85%

Instagram’s median ranged from 1.84% to 2.16% across the quarter, and Facebook’s from 0.74% to 0.85%. Both rates finished September at their highest point of the 15 months, because impressions fell faster than interactions. Instagram’s rate has nearly doubled from a low of 1.16% in September 2025, and Facebook’s has risen from 0.67% in July 2025.

From this quarter, Emplifi calculates engagement rate from impressions instead of reach, because Facebook no longer provides reach data. These rates are therefore not comparable with the engagement rates in earlier quarterly reports.

Best-performing post types

Facebook: Live Video earned more than double the median interactions of a Reel, but it made up only 0.2% of auto brands’ Facebook posts in September. Reels, links, photos and status updates were separated by just two interactions.

Instagram: Carousels led, about 17% ahead of Reels and more than double single images.

Full organic post type performance (Q3 2026):

Post type Platform Median post interactions
Live Video Facebook 36.5
Reel Facebook 14
Link Facebook 13
Photo Facebook 12
Status Facebook 12
Carousel Instagram 62
Reel Instagram 53
Image Instagram 30

Post type distribution trends:

Photos still make up 60.4% of auto brands’ Facebook posts, down from 68.9% in July 2025. Reels rose from 21.8% to 35.3%, with a step from 22.2% to 30.0% between September and October 2025. On Instagram, Reels are the most-used format at 39.2% of posts, carousels edged up from 32.1% to 34.8%, and single images, the weakest performer, fell from 29.6% to 25.2%.

Top performing pages and profiles

Paid performance: Facebook and Instagram ads

Auto has its own ad benchmark this quarter, so the figures below come from auto ad accounts only. The cost trends table sets them beside the brands benchmark and the Worldwide overall figure.

Where brands are spending

Facebook feed takes about a third of auto ad budgets, 18.82 percentage points more than Facebook Reels in second. Facebook Reels, Instagram feed and Instagram Reels sit within one point of each other, and Instagram Stories is fifth.

CPC and CPM by placement

The most cost-efficient placements this quarter:

  • Lowest CPC: Facebook feed, Facebook Reels and Instagram Reels
  • Lowest CPM: Facebook feed, Instagram Reels and Facebook Reels

Facebook placements buy the cheapest clicks. Facebook feed’s CPC is less than a third of any Instagram placement’s, and Instagram Stories is the most expensive placement on both CPC and CPM.

Spend, CPC and CPM by placement (Q3 2026):

Placement Share of spend (%) CPC (USD) CPM (USD)
Facebook feed 33.73 0.30 4.47
Facebook Reels 14.91 0.52 4.72
Instagram feed 14.42 1.03 5.69
Instagram Reels 13.97 1.01 4.59
Instagram Stories 7.74 1.34 6.07

Click-through rate by placement

Facebook feed converts the most impressions into clicks, followed by Facebook Reels. The three Instagram placements are bunched together at about 0.75%.

CTR by placement (Q3 2026):

Placement CTR (%)
Facebook feed 1.82
Facebook Reels 1.20
Instagram Stories 0.77
Instagram Reels 0.75
Instagram feed 0.74

Cost trends over time

Q3 2026 ad cost benchmarks, shown for September 2026 with the quarter’s monthly range:

Metric Auto benchmark Brands benchmark Worldwide overall
CPM (USD) 3.21 (2.72 to 3.21) 2.09 (1.83 to 2.09) 2.25 (1.90 to 2.25)
CTR (%) 1.24 (1.12 to 1.24) 1.13 (1.06 to 1.13) 1.28 (1.13 to 1.28)

Auto CPM ran above the Worldwide figure in every month of the period. It rose from $1.93 in July 2025 to a peak of $3.44 in November, dropped to $2.08 in January 2026 and climbed back through the year, ending September about 43% above Worldwide overall. Auto CTR rose from 0.86% in July 2025 to its 15-month high in September 2026, a little below the Worldwide rate. No monthly CPC series is available.

How to use these benchmarks

Use these medians as a reference point for auto brands, not a ceiling. Pull the same measures for your own profiles and compare them with the September 2026 figures above:

  • Median post interactions
  • Median post impressions
  • Median engagement rate
  • Post type mix

On Instagram, carousels earn more than twice as much as single images, so shifting image posts to carousels is the simplest gain. On Facebook, where everyday formats perform almost identically, Live Video is the one format that clearly stands apart. Budget for rising auto CPMs: September’s figure was well above the July 2025 level.

Methodology

This report is produced quarterly from Emplifi’s proprietary social media dataset, drawn from the platform used by more than 22,000 brands worldwide.

Data collection: Data is pulled once per quarter and reflects the state of Emplifi’s database at the start of the quarter following the period analyzed. It is not updated between releases.

Sample: 5,464 Facebook brand pages and 3,188 Instagram brand profiles in the worldwide auto category, July 1, 2026, through Sept. 30, 2026.

Reporting period: Monthly metrics are reported for September 2026, the final month of the quarter, and trend commentary covers July 2025 through September 2026. The ads trend series also covers July 2025 through September 2026.

Minimum thresholds: Reports require a minimum of 50 Instagram profiles and 50 Facebook pages for a given region and industry combination. Interaction distribution data requires a minimum of 300 profiles. Ad benchmarks require a minimum of 200 active ad accounts from the region or industry.

Key definitions

  • Interactions (Facebook): Sum of all reactions (Like, Love, Haha, Wow, Sorry, Anger), comments and shares on brand-published posts. Care reactions are counted under Likes.
  • Interactions (Instagram): Sum of likes, comments, saves, shares and reposts on brand-published posts. Saves, shares and reposts are counted from Q3 2026.
  • Median post interactions: The middle-ranked page or profile when sorted by monthly post interactions. It represents typical performance rather than an average, so outliers don’t skew the figure.
  • Relative median interactions: Median interactions indexed to the maximum value in the reporting period for each platform, expressed as a percentage. Useful for comparing direction across platforms at different absolute scales.
  • Impressions: The number of times a post was displayed, whether or not anyone interacted with it. Reflects visibility rather than engagement.
  • Engagement rate: Interactions divided by impressions, expressed as a percentage. From Q3 2026 the rate is based on impressions instead of reach, because Facebook no longer provides reach data, so it is not comparable with earlier quarters.
  • Organic: Posts not paid to be promoted, detected using Emplifi’s internal algorithm with near-100% accuracy.
  • CPC / CPM: Median cost per click and cost per thousand impressions across all available ad accounts, shown for the top five placements by relative spend.
  • Relative spend: Normalized distribution (%) showing the average share of an account’s budget allocated to each placement.
  • CTR: Median click-through rate for the top five placements by relative spend.

All costs are in USD. All figures are medians unless otherwise noted; UGC uplifts are averages. Data is first normalized at the profile or page level before aggregation.

Frequently asked questions

Anything consistently above 2.16% put an auto brand ahead of the worldwide median in Q3 2026. The monthly median ranged from 1.84% to 2.16% across the quarter. A free social media assessment measures your own profiles against these medians.

Because impressions fell faster than interactions. The median auto Facebook post’s impressions fell from 5,243 in July 2025 to 2,190 in September 2026, while interactions fell from 23 to 15, so interactions per impression went up.

Carousels earned the most, a median of 62 interactions per post in Q3 2026, against 53 for Reels and 30 for single images. Reels are still the most-used format, at 39.2% of auto brands’ Instagram posts in September 2026.

Auto ad accounts paid a median CPM of $3.21 in September 2026, against $2.25 for the Worldwide overall benchmark. By placement, Facebook feed had the lowest CPC at $0.30 and the highest CTR at 1.82%.

On Instagram, BMW, Porsche and Mercedes-Benz collected the most interactions. On Facebook, Yamaha Motorcycles Bangladesh, Hyundai India and Hero Bangladesh led. The top single post was a Mercedes-Benz carousel celebrating 140 years of innovation.

Take your median post interactions, impressions and engagement rate for Q3 2026 on each platform and set them against the medians in this report. Emplifi’s free social media assessment runs that comparison for you, and the 2026 social media benchmarks add the cross-industry picture.
