What’s in this report

E-shop social media benchmarks for Q3 2026 show online stores getting almost all of their organic response on Instagram: the median e-shop’s Instagram post earned 28 interactions in September, against three on Facebook. Median engagement reached up to 0.83% on Instagram and up to 0.18% on Facebook across the quarter. Reels led on Instagram, just ahead of carousels, and Live Video was the only Facebook format to reach double figures.

This quarterly benchmarks report draws on Emplifi’s dataset of 4,945 Facebook pages and 2,625 Instagram profiles in the worldwide e-shop category, covering July 1, 2026, through Sept. 30, 2026.

User-generated content: what’s achievable

Brands using Emplifi’s UGC solution saw these average uplifts in Q3 2026:

  • 11.49x conversion rate
  • 4.84x repeat website visits
  • 1.03x average order value

The figures come from Emplifi’s Worldwide Brands UGC benchmark, averaged across 68 to 83 accounts per metric. That benchmark covers brands in every category, so it is not specific to e-shops.

Organic performance: Facebook and Instagram

Interaction share by industry

Ecommerce, the category e-shops belong to in this breakdown, takes 31.3% of all brand interactions on Facebook from 10.3% of brand posts, the largest share of any category broken out in the data. On Instagram, fashion leads by a distance, and ecommerce ranks third with 8.3% of interactions from 6.3% of posts.

Facebook interaction distribution (Q3 2026):

Category Share of total interactions
Ecommerce 31.3%
Finance 7.8%
Services 4.8%
Auto 4.1%
Retail 3.5%
Others 48.6%

Instagram interaction distribution (Q3 2026):

Category Share of total interactions
Fashion 40.4%
Beauty 13.5%
Ecommerce 8.3%
Sporting goods 7.4%
Auto 5.1%
Others 25.1%

The categories listed are the region’s six highest-posting ones, ranked by share of interactions. Others combines every remaining category. E-shops are counted within ecommerce.

Platform landscape at a glance

Online stores build bigger audiences on Instagram and post there more often. The median e-shop profile has about 54% more followers than the median Facebook page and collects almost 14 times the interactions over the quarter.

Metric Instagram Facebook
Median followers / fans 111,678 72,493
Median posts published (quarter) 50 39
Median total interactions (quarter) 2,835 205

Median post interactions

The median is the middle-ranked page or profile each month, so the largest marketplaces don’t set the figure.

Platform Q3 2026 median post interactions
Instagram 28
Facebook 3

Instagram has been stable: it slipped from 30 in August 2025 to 25 in February and March 2026, then held at 28 from June through September. Facebook sat at four interactions per post for the first ten months of the period and has been at three since May 2026.

Relative median post interactions

Instagram finished September 2026 at 93% of its August 2025 peak, close to the top of its range. Facebook was at 75% of its earlier level, where it has stayed since May.

Median post impressions

Impressions count how often posts were displayed, whether or not anyone interacted. They measure visibility, not engagement.

Platform Q3 2026 median post impressions
Instagram 3,583
Facebook 2,538

Instagram impressions per post peaked at 9,193 in September 2025 and fell by more than half by February 2026; since then they have moved between about 3,000 and 4,000. Facebook impressions fell steadily from 5,296 in July 2025 to 2,538 in September 2026. The decline is not specific to e-shops: median impressions for brands worldwide fell on both platforms over the same period, on Facebook from about 1,500 to 779.

Engagement rate trends

Median post engagement rates this quarter:

  • Instagram: up to 0.83%
  • Facebook: up to 0.18%

Across the quarter’s three months, Instagram’s median ranged from 0.66% to 0.83% and Facebook’s from 0.17% to 0.18%. Instagram’s September rate was its second-highest of the 15 months, behind April 2026 (0.87%). Facebook’s rate has drifted down from a high of 0.23% in September 2025.

From this quarter, Emplifi calculates engagement rate from impressions instead of reach, because Facebook no longer provides reach data. These rates are therefore not comparable with the engagement rates in earlier quarterly reports.

Best-performing post types

Facebook: Live Video earned a median of 14 interactions, several times any other format, though it made up only 0.8% of e-shop Facebook posts in September. Links, Reels and status updates each earned three, and photos two.

Instagram: Reels led with a median of 32, carousels followed at 29, and both earned around twice the interactions of a single image (15).

Full organic post type performance (Q3 2026):

Post type Platform Median post interactions
Live Video Facebook 14
Link Facebook 3
Reel Facebook 3
Status Facebook 3
Photo Facebook 2
Reel Instagram 32

Post type distribution trends:

Photos still make up most e-shop Facebook posts, though their share fell from 72.6% in July 2025 to 60.6% in September 2026. Reels rose from 11.3% to 31.4%, jumping from 12.1% to 25.1% between September and October 2025, while status updates fell from 10.3% to 3.6%. On Instagram, carousels gained ground (28.1% to 32.5%) at the expense of single images (29.5% to 25.5%), and Reels stayed at about 41% to 43% of posts.

Paid performance: Facebook and Instagram ads

This quarter’s data has no e-shop-specific ad benchmark, so the paid figures below come from Emplifi’s Worldwide ad accounts benchmark, which spans ad accounts in every industry.

Where brands are spending

Facebook feed is the default placement, with 34.18% of the average ad budget and a lead of 19.06 percentage points over Instagram feed. Facebook Reels and Instagram Reels sit almost level behind it.

CPC and CPM by placement

The most cost-efficient placements this quarter:

  • Lowest CPC: Facebook feed, Facebook Reels and Instagram Stories
  • Lowest CPM: Facebook feed, Facebook Reels and Instagram Reels

For an e-shop chasing clicks, the spread matters: a Facebook feed click costs $0.27, while Instagram Reels costs $1.15, more than four times as much, despite a CPM close to Facebook Reels.

Spend, CPC and CPM by placement (Q3 2026):

Placement Share of spend (%) CPC (USD) CPM (USD)
Facebook feed 34.18 0.27 3.94
Instagram feed 15.12 0.98 5.18
Facebook Reels 13.98 0.44 4.17
Instagram Reels 13.77 1.15 4.22
Instagram Stories 8.68 0.91 5.14

Click-through rate by placement

The two Facebook placements lead on CTR, with Facebook feed at 1.67% and Facebook Reels at 1.04%. None of the Instagram placements reaches 0.5%.

CTR by placement (Q3 2026):

Placement CTR (%)
Facebook feed 1.67
Facebook Reels 1.04
Instagram Stories 0.44
Instagram feed 0.40
Instagram Reels 0.30

Cost trends over time

Q3 2026 ad cost benchmarks, shown for September 2026 with the quarter’s monthly range:

Metric Brands benchmark Worldwide overall
CPM (USD) 2.09 (1.83 to 2.09) 2.25 (1.90 to 2.25)
CTR (%) 1.13 (1.06 to 1.13) 1.28 (1.13 to 1.28)

Worldwide CPM ended September 2026 at $2.25, after a peak of $2.32 in November 2025 and a low of $1.68 in January 2026. CTR climbed for most of the period, from 0.95% in July 2025 to 1.28% in September 2026, the highest point in the 15 months. The brands benchmark followed the same path a little lower on both measures. No monthly CPC series is available.

How to use these benchmarks

Use these medians to calibrate an online store’s social program, not to cap it. Compare your own September 2026 figures with the ones above:

  • Median post interactions
  • Median post impressions
  • Median engagement rate
  • Post type mix

On Instagram, Reels and carousels both double the response of a single image, so they deserve most of the volume. On Facebook, where the median post gets three interactions, judge success on reach and traffic, and test Live Video for launches and sales events.

Methodology

This report is produced quarterly from Emplifi’s proprietary social media dataset, drawn from the platform used by more than 22,000 brands worldwide.

Data collection: Data is pulled once per quarter and reflects the state of Emplifi’s database at the start of the quarter following the period analyzed. It is not updated between releases.

Sample: 4,945 Facebook brand pages and 2,625 Instagram brand profiles in the worldwide e-shop category, July 1, 2026, through Sept. 30, 2026.

Reporting period: Monthly metrics are reported for September 2026, the final month of the quarter, and trend commentary covers July 2025 through September 2026. The ads trend series also covers July 2025 through September 2026.

Minimum thresholds: Reports require a minimum of 50 Instagram profiles and 50 Facebook pages for a given region and industry combination. Interaction distribution data requires a minimum of 300 profiles. Ad benchmarks require a minimum of 200 active ad accounts from the region or industry.

Key definitions

  • Interactions (Facebook): Sum of all reactions (Like, Love, Haha, Wow, Sorry, Anger), comments and shares on brand-published posts. Care reactions are counted under Likes.
  • Interactions (Instagram): Sum of likes, comments, saves, shares and reposts on brand-published posts. Saves, shares and reposts are counted from Q3 2026.
  • Median post interactions: The middle-ranked page or profile when sorted by monthly post interactions. It represents typical performance rather than an average, so outliers don’t skew the figure.
  • Relative median interactions: Median interactions indexed to the maximum value in the reporting period for each platform, expressed as a percentage. Useful for comparing direction across platforms at different absolute scales.
  • Impressions: The number of times a post was displayed, whether or not anyone interacted with it. Reflects visibility rather than engagement.
  • Engagement rate: Interactions divided by impressions, expressed as a percentage. From Q3 2026 the rate is based on impressions instead of reach, because Facebook no longer provides reach data, so it is not comparable with earlier quarters.
  • Organic: Posts not paid to be promoted, detected using Emplifi’s internal algorithm with near-100% accuracy.
  • CPC / CPM: Median cost per click and cost per thousand impressions across all available ad accounts, shown for the top five placements by relative spend.
  • Relative spend: Normalized distribution (%) showing the average share of an account’s budget allocated to each placement.
  • CTR: Median click-through rate for the top five placements by relative spend.

All costs are in USD. All figures are medians unless otherwise noted; UGC uplifts are averages. Data is first normalized at the profile or page level before aggregation.
