Retail food social media benchmarks for Q3 2026 show Instagram gaining ground for restaurant and coffee chains worldwide: the median retail food brand’s Instagram post earned 39.5 interactions in September, the highest in 15 months and more than six times the six on Facebook. Median engagement reached up to 1.72% on Instagram, also a 15-month high, and up to 0.46% on Facebook. Reels and carousels ran almost level on Instagram, and McDonald’s Japan collected the most Instagram interactions of any retail food profile.
This quarterly benchmarks report draws on Emplifi’s dataset of 6,382 Facebook pages and 3,587 Instagram profiles in the worldwide retail food category, covering July 1, 2026, through Sept. 30, 2026. Retail food is Emplifi’s benchmark category for restaurant, coffee and bakery chains, from McDonald’s and Starbucks to Domino’s and KFC.
Brands using Emplifi’s UGC solution saw these average uplifts in Q3 2026:
The figures come from Emplifi’s Worldwide Brands UGC benchmark, averaged across 68 to 83 accounts per metric. That benchmark covers brands in every category, so it is not specific to retail food.
Ecommerce brands collect the largest share of Facebook interactions of any category broken out in the data, and fashion leads Instagram with more than 40%. Retail food earns a smaller share of interactions than of posts on both platforms: 2.6% of Facebook interactions from 3.5% of posts, and 0.5% of Instagram interactions from 1.1% of posts.
Facebook interaction distribution (Q3 2026):
| Category | Share of total interactions |

| Ecommerce | 31.3% |
| Finance | 7.8% |
| Services | 4.8% |
| Auto | 4.1% |
| Retail | 3.5% |

| Beauty | 13.5% |
| Ecommerce | 8.3% |
| Sporting goods | 7.4% |
| Auto | 5.1% |

The table shows the five categories with the largest interaction share among the region’s highest-posting categories. Retail means general retailers. Others combines every remaining category, retail food included.
Retail food brands have more followers on Instagram than on Facebook, about 11% more, and post there more often: 39 times in the quarter against 32. Instagram profiles collected nearly eight times the interactions.

Instagram dipped to 32 in December 2025 and has climbed since, reaching 39.5 in September 2026, its highest point in 15 months. Facebook slipped from nine in July and August 2025 to six in August and September 2026, the lowest of the period.
Indexed to its own 15-month high, Instagram ended September at 100%, because September was its peak. Facebook finished at 67% of its mid-2025 level.
Impressions count how often posts were displayed, whether or not anyone interacted. They measure visibility, not engagement.
| Platform | Q3 2026 median post impressions |
|---|---|
| 2,772 | |
| 572 |
Retail food Instagram posts were displayed nearly five times as often as Facebook posts in September. Impressions fell on both platforms over the 15 months, in line with the wider market: the medians for all brands worldwide roughly halved on Instagram and on Facebook between July 2025 and September 2026. Retail food Instagram impressions moved from about 6,300 in mid-2025 to a steady 2,738 to 3,123 since February 2026. Facebook impressions fell to 572 in September, their lowest point.
Median post engagement rates this quarter:
Instagram’s median ranged from 1.37% to 1.72% across the quarter, and Facebook’s from 0.37% to 0.46%, with both peaking in September. Instagram’s rate has more than doubled since its low of 0.75% in September 2025. Facebook’s has stayed between 0.37% and 0.49% for 15 months.
From this quarter, Emplifi calculates engagement rate from impressions instead of reach, because Facebook no longer provides reach data. These rates are therefore not comparable with the engagement rates in earlier quarterly reports.
Instagram: Reels and carousels ran almost level, at medians of 45 and 43 interactions per post, both well ahead of single images at 29.
Facebook: Live Video led with a median of 20.5 interactions, followed by links at 11, though both are rare formats. Reels earned seven, status updates six and photos five.

Facebook feed takes about a third of the average ad budget, more than double Instagram feed in second. Facebook Reels and Instagram Reels follow almost level, with Instagram Stories fifth.
The most cost-efficient placements this quarter:
Facebook feed is the cheapest placement for both clicks and impressions. Instagram Reels is cheap for impressions but has the highest CPC, $1.15, which matters for chains sending people to an ordering app or online menu.

Q3 2026 ad cost benchmarks, shown for September 2026 with the quarter’s monthly range:
| Metric | All-brands benchmark | Worldwide overall |
|---|---|---|
| CPM (USD) | 2.09 (1.83 to 2.09) | 2.25 (1.90 to 2.25) |
| CTR (%) | 1.13 (1.06 to 1.13) | 1.28 (1.13 to 1.28) |
Worldwide CPM peaked at $2.32 in November 2025, fell to $1.68 in January 2026 and rebuilt through spring. After a July 2026 dip to $1.90, it rose to $2.25 in September, its highest level since November. CTR climbed from 0.95% in July 2025 to 1.28% in September 2026, a 15-month high, and the all-brands benchmark tracked both lines slightly lower.
The all-brands benchmark is Emplifi’s global series across all brands. No monthly CPC series is available.
Use these medians as a reference point for restaurant, coffee and bakery chains, not a ceiling. Pull your own median post interactions, impressions, engagement rate and post type mix for each platform, and compare them with the September 2026 figures above.
On Instagram, Reels and carousels earn almost the same and both beat single images, which are still more than a third of posts. Moving image posts into either format is the clearest opportunity, and the quarter’s top posts show that giveaways and fan votes travel well.
On Facebook, the formats that earn the most, Live Video and links, are the least used. Reels are now a third of posts and earn more than photos, so they are a reasonable default while you test the rarer formats.
