Social media updates for 2026: What you need to know

Jordan Lukes Director of Content and Corporate Marketing

Welcome to your monthly social media updates roundup!

As we move into 2026, platforms continue evolving with new features, policy shifts, and tech improvements that affect users, creators, and brands alike. Here’s what you need to know to power your social media strategy and stay in the know.

September 2026

Instagram refreshes its brand identity

Instagram introduced its first updated wordmark in more than a decade, alongside refreshed typography, motion, layout and a new visual system. The camera icon remains unchanged, but the new identity puts more emphasis on creative expression and community content.

The redesign has already drawn a lot of reaction, which is the real social-media angle: brands do not own the conversation once a visual identity change reaches the feed. Even a relatively subtle refresh can become a community event, complete with memes, criticism and free attention.

Meta says Business Agents are rolling out on Instagram

In Meta’s latest earnings update, Mark Zuckerberg said Meta Business Agents are now being rolled out on Instagram, after becoming available globally on WhatsApp and Messenger. Meta says more than one million businesses are already using them each week to talk with customers or complete sales.

The bigger shift is not simply AI answering customer questions. Meta is positioning these agents to summarise conversations, surface customer requests, identify what is working, and eventually offer competitive intelligence. Social care data is becoming operational intelligence, not just a queue to manage.

New Meta ad placements are changing where performance comes from

Meta confirmed it has completed its global expansion of ads on Threads and is expanding ad destinations and performance goals in WhatsApp Status. It is also continuing to optimise where and when ads appear across its family of apps.

For marketers, this is another reminder not to treat placement strategy as a set-it-and-forget-it checkbox. The inventory is spreading across more social surfaces, including messaging and conversation-led environments. The best placement mix is going to look increasingly different by objective, audience, and creative format.

Meta is using AI to make feeds more real-time

Meta says more than half of recommended content in Instagram Feed is now less than one day old, more than double the share from a year ago. It also reported that every public Instagram Reel and Feed post is being processed through an LLM for signals including topic and tone.

This makes speed more important, but not in the old “post more” sense. Brands need the ability to spot a relevant moment, decide whether they have something useful to add and move quickly without losing judgement or brand voice.

TikTok and the Motion Picture Association agree AI-content safeguards

TikTok and the Motion Picture Association announced an agreement to strengthen protections for film and television intellectual property across ByteDance’s generative image and video tools, including those available through TikTok, CapCut and Dreamina.

As generative creative tools become more embedded in social workflows, the question is shifting from “can we create this?” to “can we create and use this responsibly?” Brand teams need clear rules around rights, disclosure and review, particularly as AI-generated video becomes easier to deploy at scale.

Disney and TikTok strike a landmark IP-sharing deal for creators

Disney and TikTok announced a first-of-its-kind global partnership that gives opt-in TikTok creators access to official assets across Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and FX. Beyond feed distribution, selected fan-made content will be cross-streamed onto Disney+ via its vertical video hub, Verts, alongside a joint, tiered Disney Creator Ambassador Program.

The strategic takeaway is the blurring boundary between social fan culture and premium streaming. Disney is effectively turning UGC into an engine for subscription engagement and discovery. For brands, it signals a shift where major IP owners are no longer just policing copyright, they are actively building official pipelines to license and feature top fan creators on their own first-party platforms.

TikTok is bringing agentic workflows into campaign management

TikTok’s Q3 product preview introduced Agentic Hub, a space for building AI agents that support reporting, audience discovery, budget optimisation and administrative tasks. It also announced Symphony Agent for creating TikTok-ready ads, alongside automation updates across search, commerce and lead generation.

The useful takeaway is that platforms are trying to reduce the time between insight and action. The advantage will not go to the team that creates the most AI content. It will go to the team that can use AI to handle the repetitive work while keeping people focused on the creative and community decisions that need actual judgement.

TikTok is expanding brand adjacency around organic conversation

TikTok’s Pulse Mentions is now generally available in the US and Canada. The placement lets advertisers appear alongside verified organic TikTok content about their brand, category, products or competitors. Its broader Pulse Custom Lineups offering is also adding more control over contextual adjacency.

This is a more interesting version of social advertising than simply interrupting the feed. It acknowledges that the conversation around a brand can be as valuable as the brand’s own post. It also raises the bar for social listening: teams need to know which conversations are genuinely useful, safe and relevant enough to support.

YouTube is changing how it counts public views

From August 24, YouTube will count a public view as soon as a video begins playing, bringing its approach closer to Instagram, TikTok and Shorts. YouTube will retain “engaged views” in Analytics for monetisation and eligibility purposes.

This is important for reporting teams. Public view numbers across platforms may look more comparable, but they still do not mean the same thing as attention, retention or business impact. Brands should keep looking beyond the headline number, especially when comparing long-form video, Shorts and cross-platform campaign performance.

YouTube is raising the bar for Shorts monetisation

YouTube announced major changes to the YouTube Partner Program, including a new threshold of 10 million qualified Shorts views over 90 days for ads and subscription revenue sharing from February 2027. The platform is also expanding alternative incentives tied to Shopping, brand deals and trend creation.

For brands, this could make creator partnerships more valuable to the creators who can consistently drive meaningful audience engagement, rather than simply produce volume. It is another sign that platforms are trying to reward sustained audience value, not just participation.

New Emplifi research: airlines show what scaled social care can look like

Emplifi’s new airline customer care benchmark found that airlines respond to Instagram messages 21 times faster than the average consumer brand, while up to 31% of Facebook customer conversations are resolved autonomously through AI. The report also found airlines handle roughly three times more customer care message volume on Instagram than on Facebook.

This is a strong Emplifi inclusion because it counters the idea that AI-led service means removing people from the experience. The strongest programmes use automation to handle routine volume, then give human teams more room to handle the complex, high-stakes moments passengers actually remember.

Meta AI evolves into a full agent, not just an assistant

Update: Meta upgraded Meta AI with its Muse Spark 1.1 model, enabling the assistant to build, plan, and follow through on multi-step tasks from start to finish. The agentic experience is available in the Meta AI app and meta.ai, with a rollout to WhatsApp and other Meta surfaces underway.

Why it matters: Social and CX teams should take note: AI that can complete end-to-end tasks, not just answer questions, changes how brands can use Meta AI for customer engagement and content workflows. As Meta embeds this more deeply into its apps, it also signals where the platform is heading for consumer-facing AI interactions.

Meta launches Muse Image, its first AI image generation model

Update: Meta launched Muse Image on July 7, the first image generation model from its Superintelligence Labs, now available inside Meta AI. The model is designed to understand complex creative briefs and turn ideas into high-quality visuals that can be downloaded or shared directly to feeds, stories, and chats.

Why it matters: For marketers, this is a native creative AI tool built directly into the Meta ecosystem. The ability to generate on-brand imagery within the same environment used to publish and advertise creates new possibilities for faster content production and creative testing at scale.

Facebook Verified launches as a free, selfie-based identity badge

Update: Meta introduced Facebook Verified on July 24, a free badge that confirms a real person is behind a profile. Verification uses a short video selfie matched against existing profile photos. No subscription is required, and the badge appears across key touchpoints on Facebook including Marketplace and Dating.

Why it matters: As AI-generated profiles become more common, trust signals are becoming a new currency on social platforms. For brands, Facebook Verified also sets a precedent: identity verification is moving mainstream and will increasingly shape how audiences perceive authenticity across all accounts, not just celebrities or public figures.

Threads reaches 500 million users and adds Meta AI to DMs

Update: Threads crossed 500 million monthly active users in July. Alongside the milestone, Meta announced it is rolling out Meta AI within Threads’ DMs globally, letting users share posts, images, links, and videos directly with the AI assistant and ask follow-up questions.

Why it matters: Threads is no longer an experiment. It is a major platform. The integration of Meta AI into DMs transforms the messaging experience and creates new surfaces for AI-assisted discovery, customer support conversations, and brand interaction. For teams publishing on Threads, this milestone also signals that audience investment on the platform is increasingly justified.

Facebook Marketplace turns 10 and Meta launches dedicated Seller app

Update: Celebrating its 10th anniversary, Facebook Marketplace announced the development of a new standalone app called Seller, designed specifically for the platform’s most active buyers and sellers. Meta also noted that one in three young adults on Facebook in the US uses Marketplace daily.

Why it matters: Commerce on social is accelerating, and Meta is building dedicated infrastructure to support it. The Seller app signals that social commerce is graduating from a feature into its own product category, a trend that has direct implications for retail brands and marketplace strategy.

X rebuilds its Android app from the ground up

Update: X relaunched its Android app on July 20 after a year-long rebuild. According to head of product Nikita Bier, the project was one of the largest engineering undertakings in the company’s history, built from scratch to be faster, smoother, and more reliable. The new architecture is also designed to enable faster future feature development.

Why it matters: Android dominates global smartphone market share, meaning X’s previous performance gaps on the platform were limiting reach in key markets. A rebuilt, faster app removes a significant barrier to growth and sets the stage for new features to roll out more quickly. Social teams investing in X for global or emerging market audiences should watch performance data in the months ahead.

X launches new tool for brands to amplify organic customer mentions

Update: X introduced a new feature allowing brands to amplify organic customer call-outs and reviews, converting those authentic posts into promotional campaigns directly within the platform.

Why it matters: UGC and social proof are among the highest-performing content types in paid social. The ability to promote organic customer advocacy natively on X, without requiring a brand to recreate or repost content, streamlines the path from earned media to paid amplification. It is a meaningful development for social commerce and community-driven marketing strategies.

TikTok launches AI literacy tools and AI detection guide

Update: TikTok introduced a package of AI literacy measures in July, including a guide to help users identify AI-generated content and a forthcoming learning hub with practical AI detection skills.

Why it matters: As AI content floods every platform, the brands and creators who can clearly demonstrate authenticity will have a distinct advantage. TikTok’s proactive move here also signals that AI content disclosure is becoming a platform-level expectation, not just a best practice, and something content teams should factor into their production and labeling standards.

TikTok Shop gets enhanced analytics for sellers

Update: TikTok delivered a highly requested update in July: enhanced metrics for TikTok Shop sellers, including detailed data on product rankings, traffic sources, and conversion efficiency.

Why it matters: Better attribution and conversion data makes TikTok Shop a more credible performance channel for brands. Social commerce teams have historically struggled to tie content to sales on TikTok. This update closes that gap and makes a stronger case for social commerce investment on the platform.

TikTok partners with the NBA for exclusive in-app content

Update: TikTok announced a new partnership with the NBA to deliver exclusive content directly within the app, designed to deepen engagement with its growing basketball fanbase.

Why it matters: Platform-exclusive sports content is a proven driver of engagement and session time. For brands targeting sports audiences, TikTok’s NBA deal reinforces the platform’s push to become a destination for live culture, not just entertainment, and expands the context for sports-adjacent brand content.

Google Search Console now tracks performance from social accounts

Update: Google launched “platform properties” in Search Console on July 7, a new property type that lets brands verify an Instagram, TikTok, X, or YouTube account and see exactly how that account’s content performs in Google Search and Discover. Data includes clicks, impressions, and top-performing posts, with no website required.

Why it matters: This is one of the most practically significant updates of the month for marketers. Social content has long ranked in Google Search without any way to measure it directly. Platform properties close that gap, giving social teams data they can use to tie organic social publishing to search visibility and making a stronger case for social’s contribution to overall traffic and brand discovery.

For marketers and thought leaders, authentic expertise and unique viewpoints are becoming increasingly important for maintaining visibility and engagement.

Instagram shares new guidance on how engagement impacts reach

Update: Instagram Chief Adam Mosseri shared new insights into how engagement metrics influence content distribution. According to Mosseri, engagement rates matter more than overall reach when evaluating performance, with likes helping drive visibility among followers and shares playing a larger role in expanding reach to non-followers.

Instagram on authentic vs AI content

Update: Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri shared on Threads that as AI-generated content becomes more realistic and widespread, the platform may need to rethink how it handles trust and authenticity, potentially labeling real human content and using signals beyond simple AI tags to help users know what’s genuine.

Why it matters: This highlights how social platforms are preparing for an era where distinguishing real from synthetic media becomes increasingly difficult and could change how content is surfaced and trusted.
